Preterm birth remains the most significant and concerning complication of families who are pregnant with a multiple gestation.
This is emphasized by statistics which show that the risk of being born at less than 30 weeks gestation is tenfold higher in a twin pregnancy compared to a singleton. As a result the risk of significant long-term handicap to a twin is approximately six fold higher than a singleton.
In spite of major advances in Neonatal care which has dramatically improved the chance of survival even at very low birth weight and gestational age ages, we have been unable to make inroads in either the prediction or most importantly prevention of preterm birth in Multiple pregnancies
Times are changing. New evidence suggest that they are indeed interventions that can predict which Pregnancy is likely to end earlier, and Perhaps even more exciting is the new evidence that it may be prevented.
