WHY Do we celebrate?

National Multiple Births Awareness Day (NMBAD) is celebrated annually on May 28, which happens to be the birth date of the Dionne Quintuplets.

The Dionne Quintuplets were five identical sisters born in 1934 in Corbeil, Ontario, Canada. Their birth was nothing short of a miracle, as they were the first known set of quintuplets to survive infancy. The world was captivated by their arrival, and their story drew worldwide attention.

Here are some key points about the Dionne Quintuplets and National Multiple Births Awareness Day:

  1. The Miracle Birth:

    • The Dionne Quintuplets’ birth was considered miraculous because they were born healthy and survived. In an era without advanced medical technology, their survival was remarkable.
    • Their birth was a beacon of hope during the Great Depression, providing much-needed positivity and inspiration to people around the world.
  2. Exploitation and Challenges:

    • Unfortunately, the Dionne sisters were exploited by the Ontario government and kept at an emotional distance by their parents.
    • Their upbringing was marked by both wonderment and sadness. While they became celebrities, they were denied a normal childhood and strong relationships with their family.
  3. National Multiple Births Awareness Day (NMBAD):

    • Multiple Births Canada (MBC) initiated NMBAD in 2005 to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by families with multiple births.
    • The day serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting multiple birth families and educating the public about their needs.
    • Each year, MBC chooses a theme for NMBAD, focusing on various aspects related to multiple births.
